In a charged atmosphere that felt more like a playoff game than a mid-season match-up, the Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team met crosstown rival Hun School at the Lisa McGraw '44 Skating Rink on Tuesday, January 23 and won the game 5-4 after winning the shootout 3-1. The hockey excitement continues on Thursday, January 25 at 5:00 p.m. when our boys face off against Lawrenceville here at the rink.
In Tuesday's game, Princeton Day School took the lead early and looked confident going into the 3rd period 3-1. Hun, however, was not finished and quickly scored twice in 1:33 to tie things up. The teams fought to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation play, and the five minute three-on-three overtime that followed was scoreless. In a thrilling game-deciding shootout, Senior Nic Petruolo's goal sealed the win.
Scoring in regulation play were Russell Friedman '18 (2), Ryan Lisk '18, and Coby Auslander '19. Scoring in the shootout were Luke Antonacci '21, Ty Eastman '19 and Nic Petruolo '18. Goalie Boris Gorelenkov '18 had 32 saves.
Head Coach Scott Bertoli remarked, "It was encouraging to see our kids find a way to win a game where we weren't at our best. It's a sign of a really good team when you can come out on top against a quality team in a situation like that. I was happy they got to enjoy that moment and celebrate with all their friends."
