Founding group of PDS REx Students Celebrated at Reception This Week

On Monday evening, the seven founding members of the highly selective PDS Research Experience Program were celebrated at a Campus Center reception featuring the results of their summer internship work at top scientific labs across the country. The reception capped off more than a year of work for each of the students, which started in the classroom with independent research studies and extended this past summer to university lab experiences the students pursued. These lab internships brought them invaluable experiences as scientific research colleagues working side by side with undergrads and grad students, postdocs and other research professionals.

Dr. Carrie Norin, who developed and also directed the REx Program, spoke about each of these accomplished students, who are now seniors, and provided impressive feedback from the directors of the labs in which they interned. Jason Park, 5th-12 Grade Science Department Chair, reflected on STEAM innovation at PDS and praised the REx program for its groundbreaking work. Each of the students brought beautifully designed and highly detailed posters summarizing their research areas, questions they were attempting to answer, procedures, findings and conclusions. After the formal remarks, attendees were invited to study the posters and ask each student about their work.

Another highlight of the evening: the new group of seven REx juniors selected this fall to pursue independent research study was introduced. Each of these students is paired as a mentee with one of the original seven REx participant mentors. The senior students are excited to mentor the new group of juniors during the school year and share their perspective and counsel as the first to participate in the Research Experience Program.
