Middle Schoolers Give Out-of-the-Box Performance

The November 19 performance of Box, the vignette play by Lindsay Price, marked the return of in-person drama productions to the Princeton Day School’s McAneny Theater and yet another triumphant Middle School Fall Play featuring the collective talents of the 8th graders, led by Middle School Theater Director Jonathan A. Martin. Price’s uniquely personalized production approach to Box gives middle schoolers the opportunity to explore the often chaotic years of middle school in a fictional space that allows for cathartic, honest performances. Student actors brought their nameless characters to life as they navigated trying to figure out if the labels that have been chosen for them by friends, parents, appearances, home-life circumstances and more were the right “boxes” for them.

The play gave us a shared experience from which to explore identity in an accessible way, and that helped us to grow as a community.

-- Renée Price, Head of Middle School and Assistant Head of School for Academic Life

Armed with actual boxes of different sizes, colors and materials, characters expressed their personal struggles directly to the audience, making the experience feel more intimate and personal. Yet there were plenty of light moments sprinkled throughout!

Head of Middle School Renée Price underscored the value of the play and the learning it inspired: “The conversations that took place in our hallways and classrooms following the production of Box indicated the play hit a nerve for both students and adults. We could relate to the characters because we have all tried on different personalities as middle schoolers. We have also felt placed in boxes that don't necessarily feel like who we are or want to be. The play gave us a shared experience from which to explore identity in an accessible way, and that helped us to grow as a community.”

Congratulations to the Middle School cast and crew for a truly fantastic show. Enjoy these photos from the performance!
