The Middle School Squash team competed in the 2020 U.S. Middle School Squash Championships at Yale from January 31 to February 2. While there, they defended their highest seeding to date with a solid showing. Colten McLaughlin ‘26, Will Maschler ‘24, Aadi Shankar ‘24, Maryam Mian ‘24, Liz Zhao ‘24 and Alex Nieves ‘24 represented the PDS program in outstanding fashion, competing against 60 teams from Ohio, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. The weekend was filled with exceedingly close matches, three of which were decided by only a point or two.
In the Division I draw, Aadi, Maryam and Liz all won their sets against the University School in the round of 16, allowing the team to advance to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, they fell to Brunswick Academy, who ultimately made it to the finals. Thanks to their strong performance, the PDS Middle School Squash team is now ranked seventh in the country! Coach Matt Trowbridge noted “This core group of players is experienced in highly competitive individual tournament play. To see them come together as Panthers, supporting and driving one another onward at a tournament of this size, at Nationals, is inspiring and truly exciting for the future of PDS Squash.” Congratulations to the team and Coach Trowbridge for their competitive performance at Yale and their successful season. These young, dedicated players are building a bright future for our Middle and Upper School squash program, which will be further strengthened with the completion of the new Athletic Center and international squash court complex.
