The Princeton Day School College Counseling Office recently hosted its second annual Essay Writing Bootcamp for our rising seniors. The majority of the Class of 2021 participated in this free, week-long virtual event, which focused on refining essay writing skills for college applications. Activities included reflecting on personal values, brainstorming essay topics, working on opening paragraphs, drafting outlines, and developing those ideas into solid, working drafts (see images). The students received frequent feedback from the college counselors, who also guided students in topic development for supplemental essay prompts and organization methods for their application work. By week’s end, students left with a clearer picture of how to present their best selves in their college essays and applications.
This year's event also included the opportunity for each student to meet individually with college admission officers to understand how their essays are viewed in application review and receive feedback on their work thus far. The session also included a panel in which the guest admission representatives answered questions from the rising seniors.
The second annual Essay Writing Bootcamp was made possible thanks to the participation by the rising seniors of the Class of 2021, the thoughtful organization and design of the program by the PDS College Counseling team and the generosity of the visiting admissions representatives in spending time and answering student questions.
