Our Journey: Teaching and Learning for Social Justice

Transforming the School Environment

At Princeton Day School, we are all teachers, and we are all learners. Currently, work is happening in every corner of our institution to ensure justice and equity for all. We are actively engaging in conversations about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to address the racism experienced by our Black and Brown students and adults, the antisemitism experienced by our Jewish students and adults, and other forms of religious discrimination, as well as the discrimination experienced by our students and adults who are non-gender conforming. It is our goal and objective to transform the PDS community so that all members who are currently experiencing any form of marginalization will, at last, enjoy authentic inclusion within our transformed school community.

We wanted to create a digital archive to chart our learning. This website is a reflection of our commitment to this work and to document our School’s journey in eradicating systemic racism from our hallways. We believe that through our own humble learning as an institution, we can educate others and work towards social justice.

We invite you into the conversation and encourage you to explore. In addition to the PDS Facing Forward Strategic DEI Plan and regular updates, you will see information designed to deepen the conversation, including more details of the work across the School community that Director of DEI Mr. McKinley is leading and the School's self-work with the DEI and Olive Branch Educators' Dr. Diana Artis. Finally, you will see information about the PDS Community Multicultural Development Team and affinity groups.

In the true spirit of patient and responsible archival work, we are currently collecting our artifacts, our stories and our histories. We are discovering, taking inventory, listening and reflecting. This project, like all collaborative, lifelong learning, is on-going and dynamic as we are documenting our School’s transformation: where we’ve been, who we are, and who we aspire to be as an institution. This is truly a community-wide endeavor.

This site will be updated periodically with resources, events, stories and initiatives.

We understand that we need feedback and perspectives to grow. Deep learning is a collaborative, relational process. We invite you to join us on our learning journey in the following ways:

  • Involvement in CMDT functions
  • Involvement in focus groups and consultant work
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Alumni Council

Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Anthony McKinley

In his full-time role as Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Anthony McKinley leads and supports the School’s efforts to appreciate the benefits of a diverse community and create and direct programs—for students and adults—that address the challenges keeping the School from realizing this opportunity.

He is charged with creating thoughtful, meaningful in-house faculty professional development opportunities and drawing selectively on resources beyond the School; broadening and enriching the curriculum—in the classroom and beyond—to reflect the lived experience of all of its students; and serving as a resource for parents, alumni, trustees, and the Head of School.

He partners with the Head of School, Division Heads, Associate and Assistant Heads of School, and the Department Chairs to recruit, hire, support, and retain a diverse faculty; and with the Director of Admission and staff to build a robust, diverse pool of applicants who will enroll and become members of the School community. A member of the School’s Leadership Team, Anthony McKinley is an Upper School advisor, a faculty advisor to the Bridges Program, an assistant varsity basketball coach, and leader of the Community and Multicultural Development Team. He earned his B.A. in English with a minor in African American studies from Middlebury College, and his Masters in independent school leadership from the Klingenstein Center, Teachers College, Columbia University.

Updates to PDS Community

Below in chronological order are the updates on DEI work shared with the PDS community in 2020-2021. During the summer of 2020, the School also offered a series of seven Town Hall sessions with Head of School Paul Stellato and the Leadership Team and Board of Trustees,  as well as numerous Focus Groups facilitated by Dr. Diana Artis of Olive Branch Educators with community members representing every self-identified constituency in the PDS community.
