John brings over 40 years of running experience to the Cross Country teams at PDS as a competitive runner in high school, college, and post-college. He was also a high school coach for 12 years, winning two NJ Sectional Championships in Cross Country. He held 4 University of Delaware school records in track when he graduated in 1980. He believes in a coaching philosophy that puts a emphasis on personal improvement in both training and racing. His coaching stresses the idea that athletes who continue to improve, regardless of their competitive level, will eventually find out how good they can be. He teaches cross country primarily as a team sport, where competition against the other runners is as important as what your 5K times are. The foundation of success in XC is consistent hard work and a positive mental attitude. All members of the team, regardless of how fast they run, are integral in the success of the team as a whole unit.
