Procedures
Throughout the school year, service opportunities and organized events are publicized at Monday Announcements and weekly class meetings and posted on the Community Service Board (located in the main hall next to the note rack), as well as here on the webpage. Students are encouraged to begin serving in the Freshman year, possibly participating in a variety of programs before identifying and pursuing a single Area of Concentration for the majority of his/her service.
  • Beginning with the class of '04, a Service Folder in the class conference on pdsnet will exist for each student. It is here that students are to record their service and will receive messages from the program coordinator. These folders are accessible to each student's advisor too, so he/she can help advisees stay on track. Instructions for how to use the Service Folder are listed below.
  • Before beginning any service, students must submit and have approved a Service Plan either electronically to his/her Service Folder (via pdsnet) or using the paper form turned in to the program coordinator (box outside room 206).
  • Once the Service Plan has been approved (notice will be filed in student's Service Folder), students may pursue their service. A Verification Form must be completed and signed by the student's supervisor at the organization/agency or site of service. (While separate forms are required for each different organization or site of service, multiple dates of service with the same organization or project may be listed on one form.) These forms should be either scanned in directly to the student's Service Folder or submitted to the program coordinator (box outside room 206). Signed letters with the information requested on the form are also acceptable. * If a student is pursuing an approved independent project, he/she will serve as the supervisor and no verification form for that service will be required of him/her. That student may sign Verification Forms for other PDS students participating in that project.
  • As students complete service, they should record it on a Service Log, kept in their Service Folder.
  • Once a student completes the minimum requirement (50 hours, with at least 26 in one Area of Concentration), he/she should complete and submit the Reflection Assignment (see directions on form). Once all the paperwork (Service Log, Verification forms, and Reflection) is approved by the program coordinator, the student, the student's advisor and class dean will be notified via E-mail that the student has fulfilled the Community Service requirement for graduation. Students are, of course, encouraged to continue their service beyond the minimum requirement.
